About Ruth

How did you develop your consulting expertise?

Actually, consulting found me rather than the other way around.  I started my career at IBM.  It was a fantastic opportunity to learn the professional skills that became the underpinnings of my career. But in the early '90s IBM was going through a massive downsizing.  I decided it was time for a change.

I landed a great job with major finance company where I managed IT organizations, implemented the first Program Management Office in the history of the company, managed a $20mm budget for 200 people, and won the prestigious Leader of the Year award, an employee nominated recognition.

Things were going along well.  My responsibilities kept growing and the future looked bright, until the day that my boss lost his job and was replaced by someone with a very different approach to running things.  Suddenly my world was not looking so interesting anymore.

Once again I started to pursue other opportunities.  One day, as I was considering an offer, I received a call from a recruiter.  He was looking for people who could hit the ground running for a start-up consulting firm whose founders were from one of the top consultancies in the world.

I took the job and entered the multiple-6-figure income world of high-end consulting!

I headed two consulting practices, was responsible for worldwide client engagement of up to $100mm in revenues, worked with C-levels of our biggest clients, became a turn-around expert for failing high-profile engagements, had responsibility for approving our largest contracts, was a risk management expert, and learned to fly-without-a-net.  That's my term for having to trust your own judgment and make your own decisions.  I loved it!

The company went public within a year.  We desperately needed consistency in our sales and delivery processes.  So my team became instrumental in building the multi-week training program that all consultants had to go through before they could be client facing.  This is the same education that consultants in the largest firms in the world experience.

In 2003 I decided to make a change.  I wanted to stretch myself once more so I started my own company where I enjoyed great success from the start.  I studied coaching and then wrote a book.  All of this has lead to my decision to take everything I've learned and share it with others so they can build successful and satisfying consulting careers.

What makes working with you different from others?

That's an important question.  I can help consultants achieve remarkable results because of my unique background and experience.

  • I am very specialized in what I do.  I help consultants get and keep lifelong, high profit clients. This means I will focus deeply on your business, your clients, and your success.
  • I was part of a team that brought a start-up firm public.  I know consulting inside and out.  Not just how to get clients - but also how to keep them!
  • I've run my own business for seven years.  I know what it takes to build a consulting business.
  • You will learn what works and what doesn't.  I will share with you the mistakes I've made so that you don't learn the hard way.
  • I am a turnaround expert for large technical and business transformation programs.  Numerous times I've received the call to help save an engagement.  I'm the last one in before the lawyers.  So I can teach you how to set up your client relationships so that you never end up in that position.
  • I am a lifelong learner and I have invested many thousands of dollars in my own business education and will continue to do so.  As a member of my programs you will directly benefit from my own investments.
  • I have large-scale IT management expertise.  There is something different about a consultant who has had real-life management responsibility.  It creates deep insight into what clients are going through.  This empathy is invaluable to building solid and lasting relationships - and I will share this to you.
  • I am a trained professional business and executive coach.  Consulting and coaching are similar - but not the same.  My job as a coach is to bring out the very best in you - qualities that you may not even know you have but will change your life and your business forever!
  • I know first hand what kind of pressure consultants are under, and what it takes to build the strong mental resilience to excel in this field.  In fact, I wrote a book about it.  Check it out here.
